Giving Trends in New Hampshire

New Hampshire, one of the original 13 U.S. states, is still home to long-established families and their foundations. Longtime New England grantmakers often give close to home, and New Hampshire is no exception, with several legacy foundations of prominent families that make place-based grants. In 2019, more than 2,000 grantmakers collectively gave $367.9 million in grants for New Hampshire, according to Candid.

A substantial share of New Hampshire grants flow through the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation (NHCF), a statewide community foundation that held more than $1 billion in assets and hosted more than 2,100 funds, about 40 percent of them donor advised funds, as of 2021. New Hampshire foundations for nonprofits tend to prioritize making grants for health, education, and the environment, while funding other areas demonstrate smaller slices of overall giving.

The top funders of New Hampshire grants include community, family, private, and corporate foundations.
