IP TAKE: This is one of the few ACF affiliate foundations with a mini-grants program, so look into this opportunity for small funding needs that arise unexpectedly.

PROFILE: The Seward Community Foundation (SCF) is an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation (ACF) and based in Seward, Alaska. A grant from the Rasmuson Foundation helped establish the ACF Affiliate Program in 2008 to address the causes that are most important to local communities and inspire local philanthropy with the help of volunteer advisory boards. SCF funds local efforts related to health, education, human services, arts and culture, youth, and community development.

The Seward Community Foundation’s mission reflects the generosity of local residents and their commitment to improving quality of life. In the past, SCF has helped fund a new library, museum, and waterfront playground for children. The funder also supports the Mount Marathon Race on July 4 and local traditions of fishing and sailing that sustain the local population. It supports both immediate needs and long-term improvements that affect a broad range of local residents and that include collaborative efforts. Grantees must complete projects within one year of receiving a SCF award.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $10,000. However, nonprofits can inquire about grants larger than $10,000 by contacting the foundation’s program manager. Mini-grants of up to $1,000 are available as flexible funding opportunities on an ongoing basis. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the grants page of the foundation website. Grantmaking focuses exclusively on the Seward and Moose Pass areas of Alaska. Past local grantees include the ASLC Ocean Sciences Club, Girl Scout Day Camp in Seward, and Bookshelves for the Moose Pass Public Library.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. SCF reviews mini-grant applications each month of the year, and the deadline for mini-grants is the first Wednesday of each month. The main competitive grants cycle is typically open from mid-January through the end of February. SCF utilizes an online grants application system.
