PROFILE: The Community Foundation of Greater Huntsville (CFGH) is based in Huntsville, Alabama, and is the community funder for this region of the Southeast. It seeks to “improve the quality of life in [its] community through philanthropy.” Around 1,000 nonprofits serve Madison County, Alabama, and CFGH works with these groups to establish nonprofit funds and to offer an annual collaborative training event.
CFGH’s funding priorities include basic needs, neighborhoods, health, arts and culture, economy, emergency relief, education and environmental causes. The funder has reported over $11 million in total net assets and more than $8.4 million in total grant distributions to at least 414 nonprofits since 2009.
CFGH recently created a digital inclusion initiative to expand internet access and usage in the city. The goal is to help local residents educate themselves, find jobs, and to stimulate the local economy. Google Fiber provided initial funding for the effort. The SAIL (Summer Adventures in Learning) project seeks to reduce summer learning loss among local kids. The Boys and Girls Clubs of North Alabama, the Heart of the Valley YMCA, and Huntsville City Schools have been foundation partners for this project.
CFGH’s Grants to Green program helps nonprofits and faith-based groups adopt energy-efficient utility improvements at their facilities. This program launched with a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta and accepts letters of interest. The Alabama A&M Star Fund program, initiated in 2014, provides scholarships to students inducted into a STEM program at Alabama A&M University. The foundation also partnered with a financial planning firm called Vector Wealth Strategies to make grants in the areas of health, human services, education, and disaster recovery.
