PROFILE: Founded in 2000, the Loeb Family - Third Point Foundation is run by hedge fund billionaire Daniel S. Loeb and his wife, Margaret M. Loeb. Daniel Loeb studied at UC Berkeley and Columbia and then worked at a series of jobs in the financial industry. In 1995, he founded Third Point Management, an investment company in New York. Margaret Loeb is a graduate of Brown and New York University’s Silver School of Social Work. The foundation is known for “activist investing” and makes grants supporting education, justice reform, LGBT rights and Alzheimer’s research. A fifth initiative, “American Heroes,” celebrates disabled athletes and U.S. Navy SEALS.

In education, this funder is focused on K-12 reform and school choice. Daniel Loeb chairs the board of the Success Academy network of charter schools, and has supported other charter schools in the New York area. The foundation’s justice reform grants support research and policy development that aim to reduce incarceration rates and recidivism, and the LGBT Freedom initiative works globally to ensure freedom and prevent discrimination against LGBTQ people. The Loebs gave $15 to New York’s Mount Sinai Health System to establish the Ronald M. Loeb Center for Alzheimer’s Disease. Named for Daniel’s father, the center aims to bring various lines of research together to increase the pace of research and drug development.

Grants are awarded in amounts up to $1 million, but most grants remain below $50,000. In a recent year, the foundation gave away over $6 million. Past New York Grantees include the Innocence Project, the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University, the Partnership for Inner City Education, Harlem Children’s Zone and Equality Now, Inc. For additional information about past grantmaking, see the foundation’s past tax records.
