Price Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Price Family Foundation's New York City grantmaking involves education and health. To a lesser extent, it has supported community development and arts and culture in the city.

IP TAKE: The foundation doesn't have much of a web presence or a clear way to get in touch. The foundation's executive director, however, appears accessible.

PROFILE: Billionaire Michael F. Price currently runs MFP Investors, a New York-based hedge fund, and lives in Far Hills, New Jersey. His philanthropic vehicle, the Price Family Foundation, focuses many of its grants in New York City. Its largest areas of giving are education and health, followed by arts and culture and community development.

The Price Family Foundation does not maintain a website or outline specific goals for its funding. Tax filings suggest that education is one of its main priorities. In K-12 education, Price has focused on programs that help underserved students, including City Year New York, the East Harlem Tutorial Program, the Harlem Educational Activities Fund and Bottom Line, which works in college preparedness and access. In higher education, New York recipients include Columbia University and CUNY’s John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Price also gave gave $3 million to Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University and the University of Oklahoma to fund a "research collaboration to investigate the structural biology of the key proteins of anaerobic microorganisms." A related interest is children’s services. Grantees in this area include the Children's Aid Society, the Children's Health Fund and Harlem RBI, which "provides inner-city youth with opportunities to play, learn and grow."

Price also has a strong interest in health in New York, with a select few hospitals receiving strong support. Large sums have gone to New York-Presbyterian Hospitals including at least $14 million in recent years. Sums have also recently gone to National Institute of Reproductive Health and Montefiore Medical Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery. The foundation committed $1 million to support COVID-19 research at the Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.

Outside of these main focus areas, funds have gone to arts outfits in New York such as Jazz at Lincoln Center and the 2nd Stage Theatre. Support has also gone to Central Park Conservancy and New York City Police Foundation.

In a recent year, the foundation held more than $23 million in assets and gave away around $11.5 million. Individual grants tend to be small, however, with an average grant size of about $5,000.

Unfortunately for grantseekers, the foundation doesn't have much of a web presence or a clear way to get in touch. However, the foundation does have an executive director, Joanne Duhl, who might be accessible through Linkedin. An address and phone number are also provided below.
