Artadia

OVERVIEW: Artadia supports the visual arts through grantmaking in the cities of Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.

IP TAKE: This is a fairly transparent funder with a rigorous application process that include two rounds of selection, the second of which includes a studio visit. Though accessible, this funder tends to be bureaucratic, but the unrestricted funding is worth the extra hoops. This is a competitive grantmaking space, so plan accordingly.

Grantseekers will want to keep a close eye on the application deadline for their city, as the window for applying is relatively brief. This funder also emphasizes funding organizations or individuals that are based in major cities, rather than rural or other kinds of areas, which is important to note.

What’s interesting to note is that it’s possible for unsuccessful applicants to receive a small stipend for their time and energy applying, which is very uncommon amongst all grantmakers. This reflects a certain level of respect that Artadia has for all of it’s applicants applying in a typically underfunded space.

PROFILE: Established in 1999, Artadia is a nonprofit grantmaking organization and community of visual artists, patrons and curators. Artadia has awarded millions of dollars in unrestricted funds to hundreds of artists in various cities. The organization is based in Brooklyn, New York and is the creation of Christopher E. Vroom along with a group of arts leaders in San Francisco. Artadia serves the cities of Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. It awards unrestricted grants to individual artists each year while also connecting grantee artists through networking and forums. Artadia aims to “elevate the careers of artists at pivotal moments in their practice and help strengthen their communities through a proven combination of recognition, grantmaking, community support, and advocacy.” In terms of grantmaking, this funder is solely focused on visual arts.
