Braitmayer Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Braitmayer Foundation supports K-12 education throughout the United States.

IP TAKE: This transparent and accessible funder has an easily navigable website and clear guidelines and application procedures. This is also an approachable funder, so don’t hesitate to reach out with preliminary questions.

The foundation has, however, paused its funding to re-evaluate and “re-envision” its mission and grantmaking priorities. Check their site often for new developments.

PROFILE: Established in 1964, the Braitmayer Foundation is a fourth-generation family foundation with ties to Marion, Massachusetts and Ellicott City, Maryland. A gift from Marian S. Braitmayer established the foundation, and seven family members direct the foundation’s activities today. The foundation aims to “encourage innovative programs to enhance the quality of education at the pre-collegiate level.” This is a single-issue funder that is solely focused on K-12 education. The Braitmayer Foundation supports K-12 education efforts throughout the U.S. through seed money, challenge grants and matching grants. Specific K-12 interests include charter schools, school reform, teacher development and educational research.

Grants for K-12 Education

Braitmayer’s sole focus is supporting K-12 education, and this includes grants for college prep as well. It does not appear to make grants to individuals, although this may change once grantmaking restarts. Previous grantees include Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center, Morningside Academy, St Theresa School, and Rainier Scholars. New grantseekers can see a breakdown by year of other past grantees here.

Important Grant Details:

Past grants have ranged from a few thousand to the tens of thousands. To get a better sense of the foundation’s grantmaking, check the funding guidelines here and application procedures here. The Braitmeyer Foundation is currently taking time away from its grantmaking to reevaluate its mission and objectives.
