Bogliasco Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Bogliasco Foundation supports the arts and humanities through fellowships for various disciplines all around the world.

IP TAKE: While the foundation does not discriminate based on nationality, religion, gender, or age, it does make an attempt to create diverse residence groups, so applicants should not dismiss demographic questions.

This is an accessible international arts and humanities funder that may take a while to respond given the time difference. Funding is competitive and supports individual artists and scholars in Italy only.

PROFILE: Established in 1991, the Bogliasco Foundation is an American nonprofit organization with a program in Italy that focuses on the arts and humanities. The foundation is based in the fishing village of Bogliasco, which is near Genoa, Italy. Leo Biaggi de Blasys, an industrialist who ran a company that made sugar from beets, once owned the properties that make up the foundation’s study center. Dr. Biaggi’s descendants created the foundation to honor his memory after he died in 1979. The foundation “supports the arts and humanities by providing residential fellowships at its study center in Italy’s most vibrant, historic crossroads, where gifted artists and scholars of all cultures come together to connect, create and disseminate significant new work.” The foundation awards fellowships in the following disciplines: archaeology, architecture, classics, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theater and visual arts.

Grants for Visual Arts, Writing, Theater, Music, Film, Dance, and Humanities Research

The fellowships support “gifted artists and scholars without regard to nationality, age, gender, or religion.” Fellows spend one month at the Bogliasco Study Center located outside Genoa, Italy. The center hosts up to 60 fellows each year. The month-long residency includes living room and full board, and a private work space.

Bogliasco Fellowships support projects in archeology, architecture, classics, dance, film/video, history, landscape architecture, literature, music, philosophy, theater and visual arts. Applicants’ projects may be either creative or scholarly. The Study Center accepts applications in English, French Italian, and Spanish; however, fellows must be able to speak conversational English.
