Maurer Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Maurer Family Foundation aims to provide financial assistance to those organizations and institutions whose goal is to enrich their communities and the lives of their patrons through programs of cultural value.

IP TAKE: The foundation broadly supports the arts with small grants that support a broad range of organizations in the visual and performing arts. Grantmaking appears to prioritize organizations in the New York area, but the foundation does support organizations across the U.S.

Unfortunately, the Maurer Family Foundation is not accessible, but it sometimes considers learning about new organizations and programs via its contact page. It is relatively approachable, patience is key.

PROFILE: The Maurer Family Foundation was established in 1996. It was launched by Hearst Corporation executive Gilbert Maurer and his wife, Ann. The foundation’s board currently lists quite a few Maurer family members on its board, including its current president, Christopher C. Maurer. The Maurer Family Foundation seeks “to provide financial assistance to those organizations and institutions whose goal is to enrich their communities and the lives of their patrons through programs of cultural value.” This funder supports arts organizations across the U.S. but appears to prioritize groups in the greater New York City area.

Grants for Visual Arts, Writing, Dance, Film, Music, Theater

The foundation supports a broad range of arts programming including fine art, experimental art, applied and decorative art, film, television, music, literature, poetry, architecture, theater, dance, opera and folk traditions. Maurer Foundation grants generally fall into two categories: supporting programs designed to broaden access to the arts, including scholarships, and supporting programs that raise artistic standards, including competitions and masterclasses. Recent grants have gone to New York City’s Whitney Museum of American Art, the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, the Yale School of Architecture, WSHU Public Radio in Connecticut and the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington.

Important Grant Details:

Grants typically range from $1,500 to $10,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away $584,000. Maurer favors support of programs rather than facilities, buildings or individuals. The foundation does not consider grants outside the U.S., nor does it fund on a continuing basis or make multi-year grants. For additional information about past grantees, see the foundation’s past grant recipients page.

The Maurer Family Foundation does not accept unsolicited applications for funding, but prospective grantees may reach out via the foundation’s contact page.
