PROFILE: With a history that dates back to 1969, the Carlsbad Community Foundation (CCF) is a community funder located in Carlsbad, New Mexico that seeks “to improve the lives of people
in Carlsbad and South Eddy County.” It began when A.J. Crawford passed away and left a financial legacy behind to establish the foundation. Crawford was a self-made millionaire and a driving force for the commercial development of the city of Carlsbad. He called the area home for over 70 years and contributed to the region’s retail, real estate, ranching, hotels, and banking industries. Crawford gave funds to local organizations, including a $500,000 gift to Carlsbad Memorial Hospital, which became a significant part of CFF’s assets after a hospital merger. Today, the foundation’s areas of interest are education, children and youth, special needs, and parks.
Education is a key area of CCF’s funding. This includes scholarships to graduating high school seniors who plan to attend a college or university and scholarships for non-traditional and returning students. In a recent round of grants, CCF sent funds to 15 charitable organizations. The main grant opportunity with CCF is the Chevron Catalyst grant program, which is one of CCF’s organizational benefactors. Today, there are many individual and corporate donors who give to CCF.
