PROFILE: Women in Motion of High Point is a women’s giving circle affiliated with the High Point Community Foundation in North Carolina. It seeks to build “a large community of educated, strategic givers who are inspired to make lasting change in [the] community through the impact of collective giving.” It was created through a partnership between the community foundation and the L. Paul Brayton Family in 2015. Paul Brayton created the group in honor of his late wife, Gwendolyn, to benefit women and girls in the community. Gwendolyn, a High Point resident since 1968, passed away of a glioblastoma in 1997.
Today, Women in Motion is led by volunteers that pool charitable donations from women in the community. Grantmaking prioritizes the needs of women, children and families in the Greater High Point community. Local women can join the group with a minimum $100 donation. They collectively research local nonprofits and key issues and then vote on how to distribute the funds.
Funding priorities include the salary gap between men and women, affordable childcare, access to full-time employment and health insurance for women and girls. Women’s empowerment in business is a particularly hot topic. Both women and men are members of this group, and they come from a variety of backgrounds and age ranges. Geographically, Women in Motion supports Archdale, Trinity, Thomasville and Jamestown, as well as the town of High Point.
The Gathering Women for Education and Nurturing (GWEN) program supports women who find themselves the head of households and need help managing those demands. These grants also support women raising grandchildren, reentering the workforce, and moving into their first homes.
