San Antonio Area Foundation
/OVERVIEW: The San Antonio Area Foundation supports a wide range of program areas with special emphasis on children and youth, seniors, women, African Americans, and Hispanics. Only Bexar County and the surrounding counties are considered for grants.

PROFILE: Established in 1964, the San Antonio Area Foundation serves as the city of San Antonio’s community foundation. It has provided hundreds of millions of dollars in scholarships and grants, and there are over 500 funds under management at the foundation today. Grantmaking areas of interest include animal services, arts and culture, biomedical research, children and youth, medicine and healthcare, seniors and community at large, high school completion, strengthening nonprofits, African Americans, Hispanics, and women and girls.
Grants for Animal Welfare and Wildlife, Arts and Culture, Science Research, Public Health and Access, and Community Development
The foundation has received major donor gifts in recent years and increased its giving power. Animal services grants focus on the health and wellness of animals, educating the community about animal care, spay/neuter services, and adoption services. Arts and culture grants focus on accessibility to the arts, broad participation from all parts of the community, and arts education and outreach. Biomedical research grants focus on cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Children and youth grants focus on programs that enable children and families to lead safe and productive lives. Medicine and healthcare grants focus on reducing obesity and diabetes, are preventative in nature or provide education about prevention, and increase access to comprehensive healthcare, including dental, vision and mental health services. The funder also supports programs for seniors, high school completions, and nonprofit capacity building. It often gives priority to programs that serve African Americans, Hispanics, and women and girls.

SAAF does not have an online grants database, but it does share financial information on its website. Grantmaking is limited to the Texas counties of Bexar, Atascosa, Wilson, Guadalupe, Comal, Kendall, Bandera, and Medina. Each category has its own set of deadlines, so check the funder’s website for the most current information.
SAAF accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits at certain times of the year. It also offers special and urgent needs funding all throughout the year.
