PROFILE: Founded in 1996, the Austin-based St. David’s Foundation is a joint partner of St. David’s Health Care, which encompasses six hospitals, four surgery centers and two urgent care clinics in Central Texas. The proceeds of this partnership form the basis of the foundation’s grant distributions. With health-focused funding goals, the foundation collaborates with over 60 nonprofits partners in the area. The funder aims to “create healthier lives for all Central Texans by addressing the region’s top health challenges.” Grantmaking areas of interest include aging, health, mental health, dental health, healthcare workforce, healthy food, rural communities, physical activity, women’s health, and teen pregnancy prevention.

Grants for Public Health and Access, Community Development, and Diseases

The foundation has three broad focus areas: healthiest people, healthiest places, and healthiest care. Care grants are focused on specialty care, dental health, healthcare workforce, health insurance enrollment and use, and strong safety nets. Healthy places grants include access to healthy food, housing wrap-around services, opportunities to be active, and rural communities. Finally, healthy people grants focus on aging in place childhood adversity and community resilience, teen pregnancy prevention, and women’s health.

The foundation’s $22.3 million COVID-19 Recovery Fund makes grants to local organizations addressing the needs of vulnerable communities during the pandemic.

In 2023, it gave $43 million to 93 local Central Texas organizations to advance health equity in the region. See a list of further past grantees on the funder’s website.

All grantmaking is focused on Central Texas. The foundation provides programmatic grants as well capital and non-recurring grants for construction and renovations.
