Paso Del Norte Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Paso Del Norte Foundation supports the Paso del Norte region in the Southwest in the areas of health, education, economic development, and quality of life.

IP TAKE: This foundation underwent a restructuring, sparking hope that more grantmaking will be available to local nonprofits in the regions in the years ahead

PROFILE: The Paso Del Norte Health Foundation created the Paso Del Norte Foundation (PDNF) in 2013 to support the philanthropic goals of the region. PDNF has approximately 78 funds and has granted millions of dollars to local nonprofits by managing donor-advised funds, designed funds, agency funds, and supporting organizations. The foundation seeks to “support the philanthropic goals of individuals, corporations, foundations and nonprofit organizations to improve health, education, economic development and quality of life in the Paso del Norte region.” Grantmaking supports health, education, economic development, and quality of life.

Grants for Public Health and Access, and K-12 Education

PDNF funds charitable organizations to further the Paso del Norte Health Foundation's mission, a separate entity established in 1995 when Providence Memorial Hospital was sold to Tenet Healthcare Corporation. Since 2018, the health foundation has served as a supporting organization to PDNF to grow its assets and increase grantmaking. PDNF funds come from its health funds, education funds, agency-advised funds, donor-advised funds, and supporting organizations. Donors can establish named health funds with a pledge of at least $5,000. Health priority areas are healthy eating, active living, mental/emotional health, healthy relationships, tobacco and alcohol prevention, and health leadership. Donors can also establish named education funds to support scholarships, teacher development, classroom support, school district support, and nonprofit educational programs.

Important Grant Details

PDNF grant amounts vary based on the fund from which they derive, and the foundation does not have an online grants database. In recent years, the funder has partnered with nearly two dozen nonprofits to raise over $1 million per year as part of its 1:2 match Challenge Fund. Grantmaking prioritizes nonprofits in El Paso, Texas, and well as Las Cruces and elsewhere in Southern New Mexico. The foundation also has a partner branch that serves Ciudad Juárez, Mexico.

When available, the foundation provides information about open requests for proposals on its website. At other times, it seems that the funder does not accept unsolicited requests. Grant seekers should direct general questions to the staff via online form or at 915-218-2644.
