OVERVIEW: Jon and Patricia Baker and family conduct their philanthropy through the Baker Family Trust. Baker strongly supports his alma mater, Georgetown University. According to available tax filings, the Baker Family Trust awarded nearly $1.5 million in grants in 2017.
BACKGROUND: Jon M. Baker Sr. graduated from Georgetown University. In 1978, he established one of the earliest offshore life insurance companies, in Bermuda. He currently serves as chairman and CEO at International Planning Group, which provides wealth structuring and transfer planning solutions for high net worth individuals and executives of multinational companies.
ISSUES:
EDUCATION & YOUTH: Jon and Patricia Baker gave a $20 million gift to Georgetown University several years ago to establish the Baker Center for Leadership and Governance within the McCourt School of Public Policy and the Baker Trust. The Bakers have supported Jon’s alma mater for years, most recently, awarded the university a $1.1 million grant in 2018. The couple are also Georgetown parents and Patricia is on the board of regents.
Much of the family’s other education giving centers around the Boston area. The Campaign for Catholic Schools received $50,000 in support from the trust from 2013 to 2017. Additional grantees include The Rivers School, Nativity School, Trinity Washington University, and Boys & Girls Club of Boston.
HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Grantees include Housing Assistance Corp, Hospice Foundation of Palm Beach, and the Joey Fund. The Baker’s are strong supporters of Massachusetts General Hospital, which has received $1 million in grant funding from the trust in 2014.
BOSTON COMMUNITY: The Bakers support other organizations in the Boston area, such as Boston Athenaeum, Museum of Fine Arts, Reach Beyond Domestic Violence, St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church, and Committee to Light Commonwealth Avenue Mall.
LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the Bakers to stick with their interests, with an eye towards Georgetown and the Boston community.
