Peter and Judy Copses

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Apollo Global Management

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, Policy

OVERVIEW: Peter Copses and his wife Judy conduct their philanthropy through the Copses Family Foundation, which, according to available tax filings, gave away $530,000 in 2017. Copses supports his schools, including Stanford. A good portion of the family's philanthropy centers around Los Angeles.

BACKGROUND: Peter Copses graduated with a BComm from the University of Toronto and received an MBA from the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Copses was a vice president at Drexel Burnham Lambert and also worked at Drexel Burnham. He joined Apollo Global Management in 1990 and is now a senior partner.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Copses and Judy have been strongly supportive of Stanford, endowing a fellowship to support Ph.D. students, and creating another fund to support the teaching and research activities of faculty working in finance and investment. The couple continues to support the school via their foundation. The family has also supported Harvard-Westlake School in Los Angeles, helping finance a pool. Other grantees have included Emory University.

POLICY: Copses sits on the board of the Reason Foundation, which he also contributes to financially.

OTHER: The couple supports USA Swimming Foundation and appear to have a strong interest in the sport, having supported Los Angeles Swim Club as well.

LOOKING FORWARD: It is not clear how much money is waiting in the wings here, or if the Copses Family Foundation's grantmaking will increase. Expect Los Angeles to remain an important region of giving.
