Steve and Janet Zide

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Bain Capital

FUNDING AREAS: Education & Youth, TBD

OVERVIEW: Steve and Janet Zide conduct their philanthropy through the Zide Family Foundation. According to available tax filings, the foundation awarded $840,000 in grants in 2017. The couple’s giving has so far focused on schools in the Northeast. The Zides are major supporters of Boston University.

BACKGROUND: Stephen M. Zide graduated with a BA from the University of Rochester, a JD from Boston University School of Law, and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Zide was a partner of the law firm of Kirkland & Ellis before joining Bain Capital, where he is a senior advisor.

ISSUES:

EDUCATION & YOUTH: The Zides recently gave $10 million to Boston University for a new theater complex. The outfit will be named for Janet’s parents; Janet herself is a theater lover. Zide sits on the board of trustees of Boston College, which the couple supports through their foundation.

The couple have also supported Smith College (Janet is an alum), NYU Law School, King School, and Kids in Crisis, which works with youth and families in Fairfield County, Connecticut.

OTHER: The Zides have supported the Navy Seal Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD:  It appears the Zide Family Foundation’s grantmaking has so far focused on institutions with a personal connection to the family. Janet’s interest in theater is something to keep an eye on, as is Steve's interest in sports.
