PROFILE: The Kodiak Community Foundation (KCF) is an affiliate of the Alaska Community Foundation (ACF) and based in Kodiak, Alaska. A grant from the Rasmuson Foundation helped establish the ACF Affiliate Program in 2008 to address the causes that are most important to local communities and inspire local philanthropy with the help of volunteer advisory boards. Kodiak is a maritime community on an island in the Gulf of Alaska, and KCF seeks to “enhance the quality of island life through community giving.” The foundation funds local health and wellness, education, the great outdoors, arts and culture, and community development efforts.

The Kodiak Community Foundation embodies the spirit of the people of Kodiak, which is built upon self-reliance and strong ties to the natural elements. This foundation is committed to helping the local people sustain their lives through fish and wildlife for subsistence and supporting projects for the betterment of all residents. KCF grantees must complete their projects within one year.

Grants range between about $500 and $5,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the foundation website’s grants and community projects page. Grantmaking focuses exclusively on the Kodiak region of Alaska. Past local grantees include the Kodiak Maritime Museum, Kodiak Public Broadcasting Association, Kodiak Arts Council, and Rural Alaska Community Action Program.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The annual competitive grant cycle is typically open in May and June.
