FUNDING AREAS: Access to healthcare, STEM education

IP TAKE: Although this is a global company, its foundation is exclusively devoted to Connecticut, which is good news for local grantseekers.

PROFILE: Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) is a “privately-held company has been committed to researching, developing, manufacturing and marketing novel treatments for human and veterinary medicine.” As part of the company’s commitment to social responsibility, the BI Cares Foundation provides financial assistance to nonprofit organizations, especially in the area where the pharmaceutical company is based in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The BI Cares Foundation “committed to improve the lives of patients in need toward a larger goal of making healthier communities.” Grantmaking areas of interest include access to healthcare and STEM education.

Within both of these areas of interest, the foundation focuses on underserved populations. The funder does not support interest areas outside of these two focuses, and it only makes grants to tax-exempt nonprofits. For example, BI Cares funds Connecticut Mission of Mercy Clinic, which provides the uninsured and underserved in the region with free dental care. In addition to these grants, the pharmaceutical company offers a patient assistance program, a product donation program that provides medicines and services to patients both locally and globally, and skills-based volunteerism of employees.

The size of foundation grants varies based on the cause involved. However, this is one of the largest grantmakers in Connecticut. The funder does not provide an online grants database to browse. The BI Cares Foundation focuses its efforts on the state of Connecticut.

The foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits in the state. The applications must be submitted online via foundation system. The foundation reviews new applications once per year, and the annual deadline typically falls around early-April. Grantseekers can reach out to the foundation staff with questions at 203-798-4895 or bicaresfoundation.rdg@boehringer-ingelheim.com.
