PROFILE: The NewAlliance Foundation is based in New Haven, Connecticut and was established in 2004 following a $40 million stock contribution from NewAlliance Bancshares. The bank’s predecessor was the New Haven Savings Bank, and the foundation formed at the time of the bank’s public offering. A bank merger between NewAlliance Bancshares and First Niagara Financial Group occurred in 2011,  when its foundation became privatized and independent foundation serving 44 Connecticut communities. The foundation seeks “to provide financial support to charitable organizations addressing diverse community needs in the arts, community development, health and human services, and youth and education.”

NewAlliance’s arts funding facilitates expanding diverse audiences through art and youth engagement. Community development grants support job readiness, economic self-sufficiency, literacy improvement, neighborhood stabilization, food security, and environmental stewardship programs. Health and human services grantmaking focuses on food, shelter, clothing, access to healthcare, and preventative and intervention services for children. Finally, the youth and education grants support STEM programs that help students prepare for the workforce and for after-school and summer learning programs. NewAlliance also pursues signature literacy programs, like the Hi-5 High Impact Literacy Award and the READy for the Grade public library summer reading initiative.

Most NewAlliance grants are under $25,000, and a list of the 44 Connecticut communities that NewAlliance serves can be viewed here. NewAlliance considers funding requests for unrestricted general operating support, program support, sponsorships, and capital campaigns. However, this is not a funder that supports parent-teacher organizations, state agencies, feasibility studies, trips and tours, capital requests to build endowments, animal causes, or in-school requests for individual schools. The foundation also does not support the start-up of a new nonprofit and requires that applicants have a least a year of experience to be eligible for grants.

There is a two-step process to apply for a NewAlliance grant that starts with completing an online application coversheet before the upcoming deadline. In the past, deadlines have fallen on December 1 and July 2. Step two of the application process involves mailing or hand-delivering your full application to the foundation. Applicants can direct general questions to the foundation staff at 203-859-6555 or to Executive Director Kim A. Healey at khealey@newalliancefoundation.org. Keep up with what this foundation is doing on its website’s News/Press Releases section.
