Cappy and Beth Rothman: Donor Grants

SOURCE OF WEALTH: California Cryobank, urologist

FUNDING AREAS: Health, Jewish Causes, Environment

OVERVIEW: Cappy Rothman and his with Beth move their philanthropy through the Cappy and Beth Rothman Foundation, which gave away around $55,000 in a recent year. Los Angeles serves as an important region of giving and health is one priority.

BACKGROUND: Cappy Rothman earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. Rothman was on the medical staff at Century City Hospital, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and a clinical instructor at UCLA. He founded California Cryobank, one of the largest sperm banks in the country. Rothman also founded of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine & Vasectomy Reversal.

ISSUES:

HEALTH: Unsurprisingly, reproductive health is important to this funder, though it funds other health causes as well. The couple, via their foundation, have supported places like Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles, UM Miller School of Medicine, UCLA Urology Department (Rothman was a clinical instructor at UCLA), and Fertile Action, a cancer charity working to ensure fertile women touched by the disease can become mothers." Rothman has also supported American Society for Reproductive Medicine.

JEWISH CAUSES: Grantees have included Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, Birthright Israel Foundation, American Jewish Service, Friends of IDF, and Camp Kesem at UCLA.

ENVIRONMENT: The Rothmans have also supported organizations like Heal the Bay, Dungeness River Audubon Center, Yosemite Conservancy, and Open Space Institute Land Conservation.

LOOKING FORWARD: The Rothmans haven’t said much publicly about their philanthropy as far as we can tell, but expect them to continue to stick with their established interest areas.
