Solomon Werdiger: Donor Grants

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Outerstuff

FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Causes

OVERVIEW: Solomon Werdiger and family move their philanthropy through the Werdiger Family Foundation, which gave away around $1.9 million in a recent year. The foundation’s grantmaking focuses exclusively on the Jewish community, largely supporting educational, community, and religious organizations.

BACKGROUND: Solomon “Shlomo” Werdiger is the founder and CEO of licensed youth sports apparel manufacturer Outerstuff, and his company holds exclusive rights to outfit the top U.S. sports teams.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: Solomon’s parents were Holocaust survivors and he was born in Brooklyn, where the family has strong ties to the local community. He is the chairman of Agudath Israel of America’s board, an important grantee. Solomon and family also launched Refuah V’Yeshuah, which builds respite homes and helps Israeli families with special needs children. Grantees have included Yeshivas Novaominsk Kol Yehuda Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim, Kleinman Holocaust Education Center, Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego, and Congregation Tiferes Moshe.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the family’s strong and steady support of the Jewish community to continue. Down the line, the philanthropic interests of son Stephen Werdiger, who works with his father at Outerstuff, may emerge as the family’s giving shifts to its next generation.
