Randy and Susan Snyder: Donor Grants

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Attorney

FUNDING AREAS: Jewish Causes, Arts & Culture, Health, Youth

OVERVIEW: Randy and Susan Snyder conduct philanthropy through the Snyder Family Foundation, which has given away around $1.7 million. Their foundation does not maintain a website, which restricts transparency about its work. Tax filings suggest that grantmaking focuses on the Los Angeles area, including the San Fernando Valley.

BACKGROUND: Randy S. Snyder graduated from UC San Diego with an economics degree in 1982, and received his J.D. from USC Gould School of Law in 1987. He was a partner at Somers, Somers & Snyder, LLP. He later launched the Law Offices of Randy S. Snyder, providing representation in real estate, business corporate related matters.

ISSUES:

JEWISH CAUSES: The Snyders are strong backers of Temple Judea, and have hosted fundraisers for the institution. They also made a lead gift to The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles to create the BAR Center at the Beach, an intergenerational destination for Jews in Los Angeles. Other grantees have included MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, and Beit T'Shuvah, which deals with addiction treatment.

ARTS & CULTURE: The couple direct steady donations to Los Angeles Philharmonic. They’ve also supported places like Geffen Playhouse, Center Theater Group and LACMA.

OTHER: The family also supports health and youth causes. Grantees have included St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Thumbs Up Cancer Down, Tower Cancer Research Foundation, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and Boys and Girls Club San Fernando Valley.

LOOKING FORWARD: It’s unclear how much money is waiting in the wings here, but expect grantmaking to continue to track with established interest areas.
