Mary Alice Dorrance Malone: Donor Grants

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Campbell Soup Company

FUNDING AREAS: Health & Human Services, Environment & Animals

OVERVIEW: Mary Alice Dorrance Malone conducts philanthropy through the Roemer Foundation, which gave away around $1.4 million in a recent year. It does not maintain a website, so grantmaking strategies and guidelines aren’t clear. Grantmaking focuses on the Philadelphia area.

BACKGROUND: Mary Alice Dorrance Malone graduated from the University of Arizona. She is the largest shareholder of the Campbell Soup Company. Her grandfather, John Dorrance, invented the soup formula that transformed the company in the late 1800s.

ISSUES:

HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES: Malone is on the board of trustees of the Chester County Hospital Foundation and steadily supports Chester County Hospital, which is part of Penn Medicine. She’s also directed funds to University of Pennsylvania, School of Veterinary Medicine, and has a passion for horses. She’s the president of Iron Spring Farm, a horse breeding and training company with properties in Pennsylvania and Florida. Other grantees include Unite for Her, which deals with breast cancer; Caridad Center, one of whose aims is to “ upgrade the health, education, and living standards of underserved children and families”; Operation Warm; and Brandywine Health Foundation.

ENVIRONMENT & ANIMALS: Malone supports Brandywine Conservancy, where she’s an honorary trustee. The organization protects and conserves the land, water, natural, and cultural resources of the Brandywine-Christina watershed. Malone also supports animal organizations including Main Line Animal Rescue, Philadelphia Zoo, Pennsylvania Veterinary Foundation, United States Equestrian Team Foundation, and Brandywine Valley SPCA.

LOOKING FORWARD: Malone’s philanthropy through her foundation has been pretty focused. Expect giving to continue to track with established interest areas.
