Peacock Foundation

OVERVIEW: This funder awards grants in South Florida in the areas of children/youth, elderly, programs for people with disabilities, arts for educational purposes, environmental education, health/hospitals, medical research, and human services.

IP TAKE: Miami-Dade County nonprofits of all sizes and issues should get to know this funder. Grant seekers can submit letters of inquiry at any time. The foundation supports children's issues.

This funder’s giving strategy, other than focused on South Florida, is very general and broad. It does not name specifics about what kinds of projects are more likely to receive a grant from them or name specific lenses through which it considers giving.

However, this funder offers multi-year grants in some cases, but does not want to be seen as the primary source of funding for any given project. It’s web presence is pretty scarce compared to other local foundations, which limits information about it’s approach, so don’t hesitate to call this funder to ask more about how it chooses it’s projects.

PROFILE: The Peacock Foundation was established in 1947 by Henry B. Peacock Jr. It seeks to “enhance and promote the good health and well-being of children and families through contributions, gifts, and grants to eligible nonprofit organizations located in and/or of significant benefit primarily to residents of Miami-Dade County.” Peacock was born in Opelika, Alabama, and started his business career in Atlanta. He moved to Miami to invest in real estate. During his lifetime, he contributed to the foundation, as well as the Miami Heart Institute, Miami Kiwanis Club, Grand Jury Association, and the Salvation Army. Much of Peacock's estate was endowed to the foundation upon his death in 1994; the foundation has given out over $42 million to charitable causes.
