PROFILE: The Quantum Foundation is based in West Palm Beach, Florida, and is the largest health funder in Palm Beach County. It seeks “to inspire and fund initiatives that improve the health of [its] communities.” All Quantum grants help local organizations. This legacy funder was established in 1995 with net proceeds from the sale of JFK Medical Center in Atlantis, Florida. Since the start of local grantmaking in 1997, the funder has made over $120 million in grants to more than 450 health initiatives.
Quantum's funding priorities include health care access, improving health education, and growing the healthcare workforce. Grants typically exceed $25,000 and support large Palm Beach County health projects. It accepts applications year-round. Quantum awards under-$25,000 grants for basic needs. Deadlines for these smaller grants have been posted in July. Basic needs grants support food, shelter, clothing, and transport in the county.
Only groups that serve Palm Beach County, Florida, are eligible for Quantum grants. The funder does not support health research, scholarships, endowments, or grants for religious or political purposes. Capacity building is an increasingly important part of Quantum’s funding strategy, and the foundation provides one-on-one consultations, business training, educational convenings, consulting services, and free training workshops for local groups.
The application process for both small and large grants is completely online and starts with the submission of a letter of inquiry. LOI deadlines for regular grants typically fall in December, March, June, and August. Full proposal submission is invitation-only, and those are due in January, April, July, and September. All full proposals are reviewed by the staff, a grants committee, and finally the board of trustees. This review process takes between three and six months.
The foundation has a community room available that can accommodate up to 40 people and is free for use by local nonprofits. The foundation also has funds available for event sponsorships, such as health fairs.
