LS Foundation

OVERVIEW:  The LS Foundation’s grantmaking supports education, medical research and the arts.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE: Established in 1968, the LS foundation is steered by tech veteran Laurence L. Spitters and family. Unfortunately, the foundation lacks transparency and does not maintain a website or public grantmaking interests or strategies; however, tax filings suggest it prioritizes education, medical research and the arts.

According to tax filings, grants range from a low of $1,000 to high of $50,000. Past grantees include Santa Clara University (Spitters received an honorary degree from the school, which his son attended), East Palo Alto Tennis Foundation; UCSF Department of Ophthalmology, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Computer History Museum. Learn more about past grantees in the funder’s tax records.

The foundation accepts unsolicited applications; however, there appears to be no prescribed form and no apparent deadlines or restrictions.
