Warmenhoven Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Warmenhoven Family Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of former NetApp CEO Dan Warmenhoven, his wife Charmaine and his family. The Warmenhovens steadily support human services and education organizations in the Bay Area.

IP TAKE: The Warmenhoven Foundation is an inaccessible funder that does not have a website or provide a clear way for grantseekers to get in touch. It keeps a low profile and does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals. It pre-selects organizations for support and Bay Area education groups are the big winner here, although Warmenhoven gives in several other spaces as well. A mailing address and phone number are listed below; however, networking will be your best bet here.

PROFILE: Established in 2006, the Warmenhoven Family Foundation is the foundation of Dan Warmenhoven, a veteran of Hewlett Packard and IBM and CEO and executive chairman of NetApp, a storage and data management company headquartered in Northern California. Dan, his wife Charmaine and their family move their philanthropy through the Warmenhoven Family Foundation. Charmaine is a veteran educator, who spent three decades as a special education teacher and administrator. She worked with Catholic Diocese of San Jose developing and supporting parish-based programs to include people with disabilities and is also a steady backer of Inclusion Collaborative, a program housed at the Santa Clara County Office of Education. Daughter Laura Warmenhoven, meanwhile, has worked as a teacher and the Junior League of San Jose. The foundation’s grantmaking interests include human services, health, education, and youth.

Grants for K-12 Education

Giving largely reflects board memberships and personal interests, which prioritize education and youth. Charmaine is a supporter of Inclusion Collaborative, a program at the Santa Clara County Office of Education that "works to include children with special needs in child care, preschool programs and community activities." Past grantees include St. Francis High School, Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, where Laura sits on the board, Educare Silicon Valley, ACE Charter Schools, Boys and Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley, Sacred Heart Nativity Schools, First Tee of Monterey County, First Tee of Silicon Valley and ALearn, a college prep nonprofit.

In higher education, grants have gone to Boston College and Santa Clara University, where Charmaine has served on the Ethics Center Advisory Board at the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. The Ethics Center has received $100,000 every year since 2019.

Grants for Community Development, and Bay Area and NorCal

The Warmenhovens also steadily support select human services organizations in the Bay Area, such as HomeFirst, a network of shelters in California's Silicon Valley that provides emergency shelter options. Other grant recipients include People Acting in Community Together, Catholic Relief Services, Uplift Family Services (formerly EMQ FamiliesFirst), and Sovereign Order, a "Christian, chivalric, ecumenical and international community of members, who continue more than 900 years’ tradition of helping the sick and the poor of all nationalities, races and creeds."

Grants for Public Health and Access

While health does not see the support that education or Bay Area human services groups do, the family has given some of their largest funding to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Other past grantees include Doctors without Borders, Autism Speaks, Canary Foundation, the Alzheimer's Association, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
