PROFILE: Established in 1952, the Allstate Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Allstate Corporation. Through its grantmaking, the foundation aims to “[e]mpower all people to imagine and achieve better for themselves and their community.” The foundation focuses its giving on Empowering Youth, Ending Domestic Violence, Transforming Communities, Developing Nonprofit Leaders and Closing the Racial Opportunity Gap.

Grants for K-12 Education

The Allstate Empower Youth program aims to “create a future where young entrepreneurs have compassion and confidence to change the world.” It promotes “social and emotional learning” through Good Starts Young, which aims to foster social schools like self-awareness, self-management, emotion regulation, relationship and social skills, responsible decision-making, and social awareness. It also co-sponsors large-scale events that “celebrate impactful youth” and encourage leadership development for future generations. Past grantees include Facing History and Ourselves, the Collaborative for Academic Social and Emotional Learning, and WE Charity.

Grants for Domestic Violence Prevention

Allstate supports organizations breaking the cycle of domestic violence through its Ending Domestic Violence grantmaking program. The foundation offers educational resources such as “lesson plans for financial empowerment in English and Spanish” and “career planning and healthy financial relationship lessons for college students.” It also offers grant support to non-profit groups that provide “emergency shelter, child care and other services.” Past grantees include organizations such as Teen Living Program Inc., which received funding for its work with homeless children living on the south side of Chicago, helping to provide them with safe shelter; and Operation Safe House, which received a grant for its work providing emergency shelter and interventions for youth in crisis.

The Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge is a yearly competition that opens in spring and takes place each October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The challenge offers prizes and incentives to organizations that donate substantially to domestic violence causes.

Grants for Disaster and Humanitarian Relief

The Allstate Foundation awards disaster related grants through its Transforming Communities, which includes the Allstate Foundation Emergency Response Fund. The fund supports communities in need when natural disasters strike. Past disaster grantees include the Rochelle Area Community Foundation, which received a grant for tornado recovery efforts in Illinois; and the Summit Group, which received funding for its disaster preparation supplies.

Allstate also encourages its employees to contribute volunteer hours to causes in their communities. Through its Helping Hands grants, the foundation may also offer grants and partnerships to organizations that have developed a productive relationship with employee volunteers.

Grants for Racial Justice and Indigenous Rights

Racial equity is the Allstate Foundation’s newest giving area and aims to “create career opportunities for historically marginalized communities.” Giving focuses on career training and “removing barriers” to career development and advancement. Early grants stemming from this program have gone to Latinas on the Plaza and 100 Black Men of Greater Orlando.
