Agilent Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Agilent Technologies Foundation’s grantmaking centers around STEM education, particularly biosciences and pre-university science programs.

IP TAKE: Like most corporate funders, this funder awards grants to communities around the world in which it has a major employee or business presence, but it does not award a large number of grants each year.

While Agilent doesn’t accept unsolicited proposals, network with one of its employees to get on this funder’s radar through employee-led work.

PROFILE: The Agilent Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Agilent Technologies, a Hewlett-Packard subsidiary, founded in 1999. The company’s global goal is to be “an economic, intellectual and social asset in the countries and communities in which it operates,” while its grantmaking specifically focuses on “education and development in life sciences.”

Grants for K-12 STEM Education

The Agilent Foundation supports “a range of pre-university level science education programs aimed at helping students develop the critical thinking skills essential for tomorrow’s jobs.” Its science education grants support programs encouraging “hands-on, inquiry-based science.” Past science education grantees include the Youth Science Institute, which received funding to support a hands-on science education program, the Association of Women in Science, which received funding for its Leadership in STEM program, and Wusihe Junior Middle School in Szechuan Province, China, where Agilent volunteers “worked with teachers to develop a series of activities for these students focused on setting goals and achieving personal dreams.”

Grants for Disaster and Humanitarian Relief

Though not a stated priority, Agilent regularly makes donations to large, national organizations that provide disaster relief and humanitarian aid, such as the United Way and the American Red Cross.

Other

Like many corporations, Agilent offers an employee gift matching program, by which it matches employee donations “dollar-for-dollar” to a wide range of programs. It also encourages employee volunteerism by offering paid time off to those who volunteer for company-supported programs that “increase student interest and achievement in science education, improve the environment and address community issues.”
