Foglia Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Foglia Family Foundation is steered by Chicago area couple Vince and Pat Foglia, who largely focus their grantmaking on education, healthcare and youth organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept unsolicited proposals. Networking will be key in getting on this couple’s radar.

PROFILE: Established in 1993, the Foglia Family Foundation is a private family foundation in Illinois. In 1971, Chicago native Vincent Foglia founded Sage Products (now part of Stryker), a worldwide leader in disposable healthcare products. Vincent and his wife, Patricia, founded the Foglia Family Foundation, through which they steadily fund Chicago nonprofits in the areas of education, youth, health, human services and arts and culture.

The foundation does not have a website to guide grantseekers. Its education funding has supported both higher education and K-12 schools, including the University of Chicago, the University of Illinois, Christ The King Jesuit College Preparatory and Altus Academy. Harper College in Palatine, Illinois is home to the Foglia Center for Nursing and Allied Health. The couple also funds health and human services outfits like Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, Northern Illinois Food Bank and Marillac St. Vincent Family Service, the site of the Pat Foglia Family and Youth Center. The Foglias have also been heavily involved with the YMCA of Metro Chicago, which also bears their name. In the arts, the Foglia couple have supported Chicago area organizations including the Cary Grove Fine Arts Foundation and Raue Center for The Arts.

Foundation grants tend to range from $5,000 to $250,000. Review the funder’s recent tax records to learn more about past grantees. In recent years, the foundation has done under $10 million annually in grantmaking. While grantmaking does not appear to be exclusively restricted to the Chicago area, this is where the bulk of foundation giving takes place.

The foundation does not appear to accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The foundation’s phone number is 312-346-4101.
