OVERVIEW: The Bronfman Hauptman Foundation’s grantmaking includes support of education and policy organizations.

IP TAKE: The foundation keeps a low public profile, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities.

PROFILE:  Founded in 2006, the Bronfman Hauptman Foundation (formerly the Hauptman Family Foundation) was established by Andell Inc. Cofounders Andrew and Ellen Bronfman Hauptman.  Ellen is the daughter of billionaire Charles Bronfman, who co-founded Birthright Israel.

Grants for Los Angeles and SoCal

The Hauptmans co-founded City Year Los Angeles as well as the Charles Bronfman Prize. Hauptman has written passionately about improving graduation outcomes for all of Los Angeles’ children. In the arts, Ellen helped spearhead Andell Family Sundays, an initiative to engage low-income families and children in the arts at LACMA. The couple are also prominent Democratic donors and have given at least $1 million to the Barack Obama Foundation.

Grants range from $360 to $1,000,000. In a past year, the foundation made grants of around $2.4 million. Past grantees include Alliance College-Ready Public Schools, Crossroads School, Los Angeles Fund for Public Education (Hauptman sits on the board), Sinai Temple, Cedars Sinai, Community Partners for the Institute for Nonviolence in Los Angeles, and Mayor's Fund for Los Angeles.
