IP TAKE: Grant seekers should focus on the capacity building and direct services funding aspects of this funder’s grantmaking. The initiatives touch on very specific issues, but it can be less accessible for new grant seekers.

PROFILE: Based in Atlanta, the Healthcare Georgia Foundation (HGF) seeks to “advance the health of all Georgians and to expand access to affordable, quality healthcare for underserved individuals and communities.” This is a health legacy foundation that resulted from the merger of BlueCross BlueShield of Georgia and WellPoint Health Networks. The foundation was formed in 1999 with shares and warrants amounting to an estimated $80 million. It became a fully-staffed grantmaking foundation in 2002.

Unlike some health legacy funders, this one sticks strictly to supporting health issues. It specifically seeks to fund groups that assist underserved residents of Georgia and the public and private nonprofit system of health services. The current priority areas are access to healthcare, health disparities, disease prevention and nonprofit capacity building. A list of the goals and funding aims for each of these priority areas can be found on the funder’s grantmaking priorities page.

HGF has a general operating grant program, a direct services grant program and a health policy program. General operating grants typically support nonprofit capacity building while direct services grants support existing services that address health disparities and overcome unequal access to care for vulnerable populations. The funder also supports policy and advocacy efforts that advance health in Georgia through access, cost, and quantity.

The foundation awards $4 million to $5 million in grants each year to nonprofits based in Georgia that serve Georgia residents, as well as national nonprofits that serve the state. On its website, it issues specific requests for proposals for the initiatives of health policy, childhood obesity, rural communities, public health, and infant mortality. These are areas of particular concern for this funder.
