Jayson Tatum

SOURCE OF WEALTH: NBA Player

FUNDING AREAS: Education, Youth, and Families

OVERVIEW: Jayson Tatum launched the Jayson Tatum Foundation to positively impact and inspire children, teens and their families through education, athletics and other individual & family building initiatives, and to encourage them to strive to fulfill their dreams and aspirations.

BACKGROUND: Raised in St. Louis, Jayson Tatum and played basketball at Duke University. He was drafted third overall in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, where he has emerged as one of the top young players in the league today.

ISSUES:

The NBA star launched the Jayson Tatum Foundation to “equip children and teens with tools that will empower them to be the positive change they need to see in their communities.” Grantmaking focuses on children, youth, sports, health, and various human services.

Youth focused giving frequently centers on about 100 youth to attend an all-expenses paid summer Basketball Camp & Leadership Program.

Human services grantmaking invests in local St. Louis organizations. Through the "Daddy & Deuce Toy & Coat Drive", the foundation, with the help of partnering organizations, solicits donations of important Holiday season items.

In light of the COVID-19 crisis, the foundation’s publish health grantmaking has shifted, pledging to match $250,000 in the Boston area with Lineage Logistics, and $250,000 with fellow NBA-er Bradley Beal in St. Louis to provide meals. Grantees include Feeding America, St. Louis Food Bank, and Greater Boston Food Bank.

LOOKING FORWARD: Only in his early 20s and just rising in the NBA, Tatum should be watched for more charitable involvement down the line, particularly in St. Louis and Boston.
