Trae Young

SOURCE OF WEALTH: NBA Player

FUNDING AREAS: Children’s Mental Health, TBD

OVERVIEW: Trae Young recently launched Trae Young Foundation with the goals of continuing education for mental health problems, particularly cyber and social media bullying.

BACKGROUND: Born in 1998, Trae Young played college basketball for the University of Oklahoma and was selected as a McDonald's All-American. He was picked 5th overall by the Dallas Mavericks and was moved to the Atlanta Hawks, where he’s emerged as one of the NBA’s newest stars.

ISSUES:

TRAE YOUNG FOUNDATION: Founded in 2019, the Trae Young Foundation was formed with the goals of continuing education for mental health problems, particularly cyber and social media bullying. The foundation aims to use education and research to help make a “positive impact to all children and adults from all walks of life who suffer from mental health problems.”

The foundation’s work is just getting started, but Young launched Trae Young Basketball Academy, providing young athletes in his home state of Oklahoma the opportunity to develop and enhance their basketball skills. The foundation also recently partnered with RIP Medical Debt to abolish the debt for 570 families in the Atlanta area.

LOOKING FORWARD: Barely into his 20s, Trae Young’s NBA career is just beginning — never mind his work off the court. However, his early launch of a foundation should be watched carefully, particularly in the realm of cyberbullying.
