American Psychological Foundation

OVERVIEW: The American Psychological Foundation (APF) supports research into connections between behavior and health. It also funds research on the reduction of social stigma around mental health, fostering understanding, preventing violence, and on long-term mental health needs after a disaster has occurred.

IP TAKE: APF's application procedures are unclear, so it is a good idea for grant seekers to contact the foundation prior to submitting an application or proposal. This is a harder nut to crack

PROFILE: Founded in the early 1950s, the American Psychological Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Psychological Association. Its grantmaking supports “research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential.” APF's areas of interest include treating serious mental illness, understanding prejudice, and using psychology to help victims of disasters. Areas beyond this larger funding scope include study of gifted children and adolescents, combating homophobia, connecting mental and physical health, child psychology, and human reproductive behaviors. The foundation offers Scholarship, Grants, and Travel Grants for lectures and symposia.

Grants for Mental Health and Science Research

APF's Grants support early, mid-level, and senior career scientists and investigators working in a number of mental health disciplines, including but not limited to psychology, psychoanalysis, neuropsychology, and perceptual-cognitive development. While the foundation mostly funds research, it sometimes supports intervention and education programs and projects. APF offers dozens of individual grants with varying eligibility requirements and topics, such as sexual assault, trauma, psychotherapy, ethics, anxiety, neurology, childhood development, and many others. Grants are divided into those for Early Career Psychologists, and those for Middle and Senior Level Psychologists.

In addition to research grants, offers High School Psychology Outreach Grants for teachers of psychology, as well as a number of Achievement Awards for psychologists with distinguished careers or significant contributions to the scientific field.

Grants for Higher Education

It also offers a number of Scholarships of $1,000 to $10,000, for students of psychology, neuropsychology, child psychology, behavioral psychology, pyschopharmacology, and public policy. Various grants may be applied to support dissertation research, clinical research, general tuition, educational intervention, and conference travel.

Grants for Violence Prevention

APF's Visionary Grants “seek to seed innovation through supporting research, education and intervention projects and programs that use psychology to solve social problems.” Focus areas for this grantmaking program include applying psychology to at-risk populations; violence prevention; understanding the connecting between behavior and overall health; and understanding and eliminating stigma and prejudice. APF awards Visionary Grants of up to $20,000. The deadline to apply to this program is April 1.
