As well, they’ve streamlined the application process by installing a grant application submission button on their site, unlike other funders.

PROFILE: Established in 1996, Addax & Oryx Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Geneva, Switzerland. Through its grantmaking, the foundation aims to fight “the root causes of poverty in Africa and the Middle East,” by supporting projects focused on health, education, community development and the environment.

Grants for Global Health

Addax & Oryx typically awards its global health related grants out of its health and community development programs. Its health program focuses on access to healthcare, good health and hygiene and its community development program focuses on food security, income-generating activities, sanitation, power generation and “much more.”

Past global health grantees include Pro-Action Development, which received a grant to support its work improving health and sanitation to people living in Gihanga, Burundi; and 1001 Fountains for Tomorrow, which received funding for its project setting up two drinking water stations in rural communities in Madagascar.

Grants for Global Development and Women and Girls

While Addax & Oryx does not have a dedicated global development program, it funds related grants through its community development and education interest areas. The community development program focuses on sustainable development centered on “[f]ood security, income-generating activities, sanitation, power generation and much more.” Past grantees include Community Action for Development, which received a grant for its project improving food production, nutrition and revenues for smallholder farmers in Bangem, Cameroon; and the Hilde Back Education Fund, which received funding for its work providing access to secondary school for underprivileged children in Kenya.

The foundation’s education grantmaking focuses on reading, writing, and “the acquisition of a minimum education and practical professional skills.” Some grantmaking has prioritized programs for women and girls. Past education grantees include Sabre Education, which received funding to improve teaching methods in Ghana, and the Women’s Global Education Project, which works to “empower young people, particularly women and girls, in rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa to build better lives and foster more equitable communities.”

Grants for the Environment and Sustainable Agriculture

Addax & Oryx considers its environment programs to be the foundation of all its other projects: “Human development is only sustainable if it respects and protects its natural environment.” Past environmental projects include MCDI (Mpingo Conservation & Development Initiative), which received funding to develop sustainable timber production practices in Tanzania; Cycling out of Poverty Foundation Uganda (CooP-Uganda), which received support to supply female headed farming families with multi-purpose bicycles in Uganda; and FERT, which received support to develop an agricultural college in Madagascar.
