All Points North Foundation

OVERVIEW: This funder supports organizations that promote middle school education, including teacher training and student development, and solar energy initiatives. This funder also supports solar energy initiatives.

IP TAKE: APNF is very focused in its funding areas. Small and mid-sized organizations involved in middle school education or solar energy might find success here. However, it has very high standards: it will not fund organizations that have not been operating successfully for over a year, and will only award multi-year grants to groups with which it has an extended, proven relationship.

PROFILE: Established in 2011, the All Points North Foundation (APNF) is a small, private foundation based in Boston, MA. It seeks to make “a measurable difference one step at a time, one community at a time.” The foundation’s grantmaking supports two focus areas: public middle school education (grades 6-8) and solar energy.

Grants for K-12 Education

The foundation’s Education Grants support public middle school education in underserved communities, both urban and rural. The grants “recognize the vital importance of the middle school years in shaping” children’s futures. APNF funds programs that prepare and retain middle school teachers, as well as student development programs that help students grow academically, socially and emotionally. Grantees include Breakthrough Collaborative, Citizen Schools, Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship, PowerMyLearning, Resource Central, Sisters Circle, and TeachUnited.

Grants for Climate Change and Clean Energy

All Points North Foundation’s grantmaking for clean energy primarily centers around solar energy. Solar Energy Grants support “the penetration of solar through education, job training and use of solar electric technologies in the United States.” These grants fund two priority areas: providing solar energy workforce development training for tribal communities and villages, and working with small- to medium-sized science centers to educate students, families and local communities on the benefits and science behind solar energy. Grantees include Emerald Coast Fitness Foundation, GRID Alternatives, Habitat for Humanity, and Instituto Nueva Escuela.
