Beit Trust

OVERVIEW: The Beit Trust supports global development, animals and wildlife, environmental conservation and global health in Africa.

IP TAKE: This accessible funder has very well-defined focus areas, and new grantseekers will find it difficult to secure funding here. However, those that do manage to get Beit’s attention and prove themselves a good fit for the Trust’s agenda, may receive multi-year, continued support. This supportive funder doesn’t leave much space for new grantees, but don’t let that stop you from reaching out, since it does leave some space for new projects to fund each year.

PROFILE: Established in 1906, the Beit Trust is a private philanthropic organization and independent charity headquartered in the United Kingdom and also with an office in Zimbabwe. Alfred Beit, a financier and philanthropist, created this trust in his will to carry on his legacy of giving to charitable causes. Beit was involved with developing the railway system in Southern Africa, and so he created this organization to further promote the development of regional African communities. Over time, the trust’s interests have evolved and expanded to other issues that affect people in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Grantmaking areas of focus for the Beit Trust include education, environmental conservation, wildlife, health, seniors and human services. In addition to grants, the funder also awards post-graduate scholarships at British and South African universities.

Grants for Global Development, Global Health, Animals & Wildlife, and Environmental Conservation

According to the Trust’s website, Beit’s Grants program provides funding and support to “established, independent institutions, in particular schools, hospitals and health centers” and does not give grants to government organizations and will not fund start-ups. It works to divide grants equitably between Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Previous and ongoing grantees include IT Schools Africa, which supplies refurbished computers to schools, and Book Aid International, “which supplies a very broad range of books, educational materials and assistance to beneficiaries in developing countries worldwide.” It also supports Beit Trust Black Rhino Conservation Project.

Beit also funds scholarships for Postgraduate degrees, specifically Master’s Degrees. It does not provide scholarships for undergraduate work or Ph.D. research.
