Louis L. Borick Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Louis L. Borick Foundation supports arts, early childhood education, foster youth, preservation, LGBT and animal welfare. It supports nonprofit art organizations that increase access to arts education, art institutions, and museums.

IP TAKE: This is a modest funder that only awards a few grants per year and tends to support the same partners continuously. It may be difficult for new grantseekers to break in. For those who secure funding, this is a hands-on funder. Keep in mind that while Borick conducts work nationally, it has geographic preferences that reappear in its grantmaking. This funder is not currently accepting unsolicited applications for funding.

PROFILE: The Louis L. Borick Foundation was established in 1997 by Louis Borick, the founder of Superior Industries International, a leading manufacturer of aluminum wheels used in automobiles. Based in Houston, Texas, the foundation aims to “create opportunity for people to reach their full potential, positively contribute to society and participate in a culturally rich community by supporting education, youth, leadership development, and the arts.” Its stated initiatives are arts, early childhood education, foster youth, preservation, LGBT and animal welfare.

Grants for Early Childhood Education and Youth

The foundation’s early childhood education grants “support nonprofit organizations and collaborative initiatives working to strengthen families, support parents as their child’s first teacher, and increase access to high quality early learning.” Its foster youth grants fund “direct services to foster youth and transition age foster youth, as well as “organizations advocating for improvements to the child welfare system.” Past grantees include Para Los Niños , an organization providing early education and social services to underserved communities in Los Angeles, and the Center for Education of the Infant Deaf.

Grants for Environmental Conservation

The Borick Foundation’s preservation grants support organizations that “preserve open space and wilderness areas.” Borick also seeks out organizations preserving historical and architectural heritage. Past grantees include Big Morongo Canyon Preserve, Community Foundation of Jackson Hole, Five Valleys Land Trust, Montana Ghost Town Preservation Society, and the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association.

Grants for Animals and Wildlife

The Borick Foundation’s animal welfare grants support “organizations researching and promoting the health of animals, with a specific focus on horses.” It specifically prioritizes “equine orthopedic studies.” However, Borick’s grantmaking reflects a broader interest in animal welfare. Past grantees include AniMeals No-Kill Adoption Center and Animal Food Bank, as well as the Coachella Valley Wild Bird Center.

Grants for LGBTQ

The Borick Foundation’s LGBT grants support organizations that “build community and promote equality for all people,” as well as groups dedicated to fighting HIV/AIDS. Grantees include DIFFA/Dallas, Point Foundation, Men’s Health Foundation, and CenterLink.

Grants for Visual Arts and Art Education
