Camphill Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Camphill Foundation’s global development grantmaking focuses on building and reconstruction of schools in developing countries.

IP TAKE: Camphill is an approachable, modest funder that seems to prefer supporting local and grassroots groups. This funder likes to help its grantees scale up by bringing them into the Camphill fold, considering them an extended community of the foundation’s. Along with its grants, Camphill works to help grantees with strategic planning, leadership training, succession planning, and regional communication and activities, as well as helping their grantees, which become part of the Camphill family, retain its coworkers.

PROFILE: Established in 1966, the Camphill Foundation is unique in that it awards grants to develop what it refers to as “Camphill Communities” in the U.S. and abroad. The foundation describes these communities as places “[w]here values of service, sharing, spiritual nourishment, and commitment to recognizing each individual’s gifts and contributions offer a model of renewal for a wider society.” There are currently over 100 Camphill Communities around the world.

Camphill’s international grantmaking occurs through its Capital Needs and Capacity Building funding programs. The Capital Needs program awards grants for the brick-and-mortar capital improvements. while the Capacity Building program supports strategic planning and regional communication activities.

Grants for Global Development
Beyond its community building work, much of Camphill’s global development grantmaking supports building and reconstructing schools in developing countries. It also awards grants to housing projects in both developing and developed countries.

Past grantees include $48,000 to East-West Exchange (Asia), $10,000 for Camphill Agualinda (Colombia), $9,000 to support Respirar Comunidad (Argentina), and $5,000 to Camphill Nodibinājums Rožkalni (Latvia).

Grants for Work and Opportunity
The foundation broadly supports programs that “practice an art of daily living, mindful of man’s responsibility to the earth” and create opportunities for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It doesn’t name specifics regarding its economic development interests; however, proposals focused on the community at large have an edge.

Past grantees include $15,000 to Raphael Village, $14,000 for Camphill Communities Ontario, and $10,000 to Camphill Hudson.

Grants for Public Health
The foundation’s public health grantmaking supports caregiving and funding for programs that create “transformative living experiences for children, youth and adults with developmental disabilities.”

Past grantees include $14,000 to Camphill Communities Ontario for funding “to expand a maple syrup social enterprise, through which adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities develop new skills and participate in paid work opportunities.” Other former grantees include $8,000 to Heartbeet Lifesharing and $25,000 for Glenora Farm.

Important Grant Details:
The foundation rarely awards grants over $50,000, and most international grants range between $25,000 to $50,000. Camphill does not award many grants annually, so grant seekers can expect competition from other applicants. View former grantees here.

Camphill accepts unsolicited grant applications throughout the year and encourages grant seekers to get in touch if they believe their work closely aligns with Camphill’s grantmaking priorities. Application information is here.
