PROFILE: Founded in 1992, the Catalyst Foundation was established by Dr. Kunio Suyama, co-founder of the OYO Corporation. Based in Valhalla, New York, (not to be confused with the Catalyst Foundation based in Portland, Oregon) the foundation seeks to “foster cross-disciplinary doctoral level university research in the scientific and engineering fields,” and supports “research projects in which at least one discipline is related to analog or mixed analog/digital integrated circuit design and analysis.” Catalyst awards research project grants to help defray the costs of student support—including the costs of salary, tuition and travel conferences—equipment and miscellaneous expenses, and research supervisor conference travel attendance.
Grants for Science Research and STEM Education
Catalyst provides funding for “university cross-disciplinary research projects in which at least one discipline is related to analog or mixed analog-digital integrated circuit design and analysis.” It gives preference to projects that help diffuse such work geographically.
The foundation limits its equipment and miscellaneous expenses grants to $20,000 or less and its travel and conference attendance grants to $2,500 per year for students and $3,000 per year for research supervisors. The duration of each is up to four years. Grantees may request additional funding after the initial grant period ends; however, Catalyst warns that such grants are “[c]onsidered only in exceptional circumstances.”
