CurePSP

OVERVIEW: CurePSP supports researcher projects investigating progressive supranuclear palsy and other prime of life neurodegenerative diseases.

IP TAKE: This funder makes grants of up to $100,000 to researchers studying prime of life degenerative diseases. The organization also awards annual fellowships for graduate students working in the field. Applicants should be aware that the specific focus of the organization’s grantmaking may change from year to year. It is worthwhile to check CurePSP’s research page frequently for updates and changes. The focus of the research CurePSP changes annually, so it is important to check back annually.

PROFILE: The Society for PSP was established in 1990 when David Saks contacted the National Organization of Rare Disorders (NORD) to get a list of people whose lives had been impacted by progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a prime of life neurodegenerative disease. Prime of life neurodegenerative diseases can most easily be described as a group of brain diseases that affect people who are in middle age or in their 50s and 60s. These diseases have no cure, often limited treatment options, and lead to early death.

Neuroscience Grants

CurePSP awards grants to researchers studying many prime of life neurodegenerative diseases; however, the foundation prioritizes funding work related to PSP, corticobasal degeneration (CBD), multiple system atrophy (MSA), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). CurePSP offers several Research Grants for scientists with up to $100,000 for one- or two-year studies.

  • Pathway Grants support projects studying the fundamental neurobiology of PSP and CBD and suggests that “studies focusing on mechanisms common to multiple neurogenerative are strongly encouraged.”

  • Pipeline Grants support “translational projects focusing on new therapeutics and biomarkers for PSP and CBD,” which this funder believes “will accelerate the development of therapeutics that have the potential to prevent, treat, or cure PSP and CBD by accelerating the translation of basic science discoveries into novel therapeutics.”

  • Enterprise Grants supports “large research projects conducted by leading senior investigators at major institutions. These studies may have a longer time horizon and broader scope” and may involve “joint funding from other sources.”

  • CurePSP Student Fellowships support students and trainees conducting summer research projects focused on PSP, CBD or MSA.

Important Grant Details:

This funder makes between $300,000 and $500,000 in grants each year, with recent grants ranging from $50,000 to $100,000.

  • Recipients include individual researchers and teams working at institutions including Duke University, the Icahn School of Medicine and the Regenerative Research Foundation.

  • For additional information about past grantmaking, see the organization’s recent tax filings.

  • Projects are evaluated by a Scientific Advisory Board, which collaborates with the foundation’s vice president of scientific affairs, and the Board of Directors Research Committee to decide on which projects to fund.
