The Cure Starts Now Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Cure Starts Now Foundation backs pediatric brain cancer research projects, prioritizing those focusing on Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG).

IP TAKE: This foundation’s research funding has been ramping up in recent years. Grantseekers should note that it uses a modified version of the NIH grant application scoring system, so applicants should brush up on their knowledge of the system before approaching Cure Starts Now. This is an accessible funder that’s approachable and sensitive in its giving.

PROFILE: The founding of the Cure Starts Now Foundation (CSN) was inspired by a little girl named Elena who passed away from brainstem glioma when she was just five years old. Since those early days, the foundation “fights for the cure for other children with brainstem glioma and cancer survivors everywhere.” The foundation awards biannual research grants to both institutions and medical professionals who focus on pediatric brain cancers. A specific funding interest for the foundation is research related to Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG), the disease CSN originally targeted.

Grants for Science, Brain and Cell Research
CSN’s Research Grants support institutions and researchers “whose research focuses on cancers that present the greatest opportunities for a homerun cancer cure.” Recent grants include $50,000 to Johns Hopkins, for research into “using zebrafish to accelerate DIPG drug development, $100,000 to the Campbell Family Institute for “defining the molecular mechanisms of DIPG development and progression to uncover novel therapeutic targets,” and $200,000 to Texas Children’s Hospital for “targeting DIPG through Combining a Super-activator (MCB-613) of Steroid Receptor Co-activators with Radiation.”

Grants typically range from $50,000 to $200,000, although grants over $100,000 must be reviewed and approved by the Medical Advisory Council Chair. To learn more about the types of projects and organizations receiving CSN support, visit the Grants Page on its website.
