PROFILE: Libby Moore Cornett established the DanPaul Foundation in 2002 to honor the memory of her sons, Daniel and Paul, who died when the family’s sailboat foundered off the coast of Charleston, South Carolina in December 1997. Moore Cornett also lost her husband, Mike Cornett, and a nephew, Bobby Lee Hurd, in the accident. Based in Virginia, the foundation “[s]eeks to honor their memory by helping others in the world, using its resources to train teachers in early childhood development, protect children from abuse, stimulate their personal responsibility, and offer them opportunities for enrichment.” The foundation’s stated grantmaking programs are Scientific Endeavors, Clean Air and Water, Child Advocacy, Homelessness, Poverty and Neglect and Refugee Enrichment. The foundation also awards scholarships and organizes workshops, conferences and seminars on child development. Throughout each of its initiatives, the foundation seeks to involve and educate young people toward becoming responsible global citizens.

Grants for Housing and Homelessness

The DanPaul Foundation’s homelessness funding aims to provide adequate housing and basic needs to underprivileged and homeless people in the U.S. The program also seeks to encourage “young people to take a personal interest” in these populations and to think about solutions to the problem of homelessness on a large scale. Past grantees include Casa Central Social Services of Chicago, the YMCA of Anderson, South Carolina and the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Grants for Work and Opportunity

Work and opportunity grants stem from DanPaul’s poverty and neglect program. The poverty and neglect initiative overlaps significantly with the homelessness initiative and aims to involve youth organizations in charitable initiatives aimed at helping low-income and at-risk populations. Grants have gone to organizations including the Circles Campaign of the Mid-Ohio Valley, the Community Partnership of Rolla, Missouri and Coastal Crisis Chaplaincy of Charleston, South Carolina.

Grants for Humanitarian Aid and Refugees

The refugee enrichment program works to help refugees “transition to life in a new country.” Funding from this initiative has mostly gone to enrichment and therapeutic programs for immigrant children. Past grantees include Equine Assisted Therapies of Boca Raton, Florida and art and music therapy programs at CHIP of Roanoke, Virginia.

Grants for Violence Prevention

DanPaul’s child advocacy program aims to prevent violence against children and to advocate for children who have been removed from abusive and neglectful situations. In New Jersey, the foundation has supported Court Appointed Special Advocates of Hudson County, which recruits volunteers to help foster children gain access to medical, therapeutic and educational services. Another grantee, Fairfax Area Christian Emergency and Transitional Services, works in foster, adoption and advocacy services.

Grants for Science Research

DanPaul runs a scientific endeavors initiative that supports scientific research with the goal of improving “the quality of life for everyone in the world.” In Knoxville, Tennessee, the foundation partnered with the Knoxville Leadership Foundation for its energy efficiency initiative.

Grants for Early Childhood Education

In addition to funding early childhood education through its child advocacy programs, the DanPaul Foundation broadly aims to produce workshops and seminars on early childhood development.

Grants for Higher Education

DanPaul broadly awards need-based academic scholarships for post-secondary education.
