OVERVIEW: The Dart Center runs fellowships and awards programs for journalism that addresses violence, conflict and trauma.

IP TAKE: The Dart Center’s fellowship programs appear to have paused. The center continues to run its awards program for Excellence in the Coverage of Trauma and accepts entries via an online entry form. PROFILE: Created in 1999 by the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, the Dart Center for Journalism & Trauma promotes ethical and responsible reporting of violence, conflict and tragedy. The center seeks to advocate for “ethical and thorough reporting of trauma,” to educate “journalists and journalism students about the science and psychology of trauma,” to provide “a professional forum for journalists in all media to analyze issues,” and to foster “interdisciplinary collaboration and communication among news professionals, clinicians, academic researchers and others.” It supports journalism with a series of fellowships and its Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma. The center also runs several educational and professional development programs and resources via its website.

Dart’s Ochberg ellowships support “veteran and mid-career journalists who wish to deepen their knowledge of emotional trauma and psychological injury” and better report on “violence, conflict and tragedy.”  Fellows participate in “an intensive weeklong program of seminars held at Columbia University in New York City.” Applicants from across all news media are eligible; however, they must have considerable experience covering the effects of violence. the most recent fellowship program was conducte in 2019; prospective applicants should check the program’s webpage for updates.

The Dart Awards for Excellence in Coverage of Trauma recognize “exemplary journalism on the impact of violence, crime and other traumatic events on individuals, families and communities.” Awards are limited to newspaper, magazine, online, radio, television, video and multimedia projects based in North America. Two awards in the amount of $5,000 are granted each year. Entries are accepted from both news organizations and independent journalists from the U.S. and territories via an online entry form.
