PROFILE: Founded in 2013 by Ashley Pettus, the Global Hearthworks Foundation, a small organization that “[s]upports market-based enterprises involved in bringing sustainable fuels and cookstoves to consumers in the poorest parts of the developing world.” Over 3 billion people around the world uses fires or charcoal stoves for both cooking and heating. The use of such stoves contributes to higher mortality rates, deforestation, climate change and land degradation.

Grants for Global Development

Global Hearthworks offers grants as well as low-interest, no-recourse loans and financial assistance to “[b]usinesses and non-profits that promote efficient, affordable, climate friendly cooking practices, which are viable in the communities in which they will be used.” It’s approach focuses on creating access to clean biomass stoves. Past grantees include Arifu, Koko Networks and Upenergy Uganda, among others.
