Give2Asia

OVERVIEW: Give2Asia facilitates grantmaking sourced from U.S.-based corporations, foundations and other donors in support of organizations operating in Asia. This organization works in 23 Asian and Oceanian nations, supporting global development, human rights, health, conservation, disaster relief, women and girls and arts and culture.

IP TAKE: Give2Asia is not a traditional grantmaker; this organization facilitates grants and donations between corporations, foundations, individual donors and nonprofits operating in Asia. The organization focuses on grassroots organizations and charities working in areas of high need. Grantseekers in Asia may request a consultation through the organization’s website. Interestingly, this funder invites Asian nonprofits that are “working to solve critical issues” to request a consultation. Overall, this funder appreciates innovative approaches in its areas of interests given its own, unique funding position. It’s also open-minded and supportive of its grantees in a variety of ways.

PROFILE: Established in 2001 and based in Oakland, California, Give2Asia is a nonprofit that assists corporations, foundations and other donors in connecting with organizations in 23 Asian and Oceanian nations. Give2Asia boasts an extensive network of professionals working on the ground in Asia to identify pressing needs and to select organizations that are poised to effect change in the areas of human rights, development, health, climate change, disaster relief and women’s and girls’ causes.

Grants for Global Development and Human Rights

About 40% of Give2Asia’s grant facilitation concerns human rights and development in the 23 nations where the organization operates. Areas of focus include education, livelihood, infrastructure and civil society. In India, Give2Asia has supported Janakalyan, which works to empower underprivileged groups to assert control over educational, vocational, social, political and cultural institutions for improved quality of life. Another grantee, Sano Palia, aims to eliminate poverty and injustice in Nepal through the improvement of health, social and economic conditions. And in Afghanistan, Afganaid has used funding to support initiatives to support women’s rights, basic services and good governance. Other grantees in the areas of global development and human rights include Cambodia’s Temple Garden Foundation, ChildFund Korea and the Institute for Developmental Studies and Practices of Pakistan.

Grants for Global Health

Health funding sourced from Give2Asia tends to focus on preventative healthcare for underserved groups, pediatric and maternal care, the treatment of chronic diseases and the development of healthcare infrastructure in low-income and rural areas. One grantee, India’s MAMTA, provides maternal, pediatric, reproductive and preventative health care to residents of India’s poorest areas and has recently expanded its scope to other Asian countries. Another grantee, Sustained Health Initiatives of the Philippines, Inc., uses funding from Give2Asia to support affordable AIDS/HIV treatment programs, and in Myanmar, Stiching Medical Action has received grants to run 11 clinics that serve the country’s poorest urban and rural communities. Other health recipients include the East Timor Hearts Fund, South Korea’s Saejowi Initiative for National Integration, the Cambodian Children’s Fund and the Japanese Red Cross Kyushu International College of Nursing.

Grants for Climate Change and Clean Energy

Climate change is a smaller area of grantmaking for Give2Asia, accounting for less than ten percent of giving. One recipient, Hong Kong’s Clean Air Network, runs education and awareness programs about air pollution, zero-emissions public transportation and sustainable urban infrastructures. Another grantee, DOMI Earth, supports the transition to clean energy systems in poor rural areas of China and Taiwan. And in Indonesia, the Bebali Foundation works to promote sustainable and climate-friendly practices in the textile industry.

Grants for Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems

Sustainable agriculture and food systems are a newer area of interest for Give2Asia, which has worked with several local initiatives to support sustainable farming, fishing and agricultural practices. In India, the Foundation for Rural Recovery and Development provides technical support to grassroots farming organizations that implement water conservation and climate resilient practices in several states. Seafood Legacy, another Give2Asia grantee, provides consultation services that help fisheries seafood businesses move toward sustainable practices in Japan. And another Japanese grantee, the Ippan-Shadan-Hojin Honey Farm, used funding to run environmental education programs about pollinators and the dangers of Colony Collapse Disorder.

Grants for Disaster Relief

Give2Asia has responded to flooding and cyclone disasters in Bangladesh, India, China and Japan with grantmaking for relief, recovery and basic needs for those displaced by disasters. In Bangladesh, the Sajida Foundation used funding to provide cash grants, water purifying tablets and oral rehydration packs to 20,000 families who were victims of the devastating monsoon floods of 2020. In India, the SEEDS organization provided residents of areas affected by the flooding crisis of the summer of 2020 with water, dry food, hygiene kits and PPE for COVID-19 prevention. And in China’s Hubei Province, where continual rain caused landslides and flooding, the Shenzhen One Foundation used a grant to mobilize rescue teams and volunteers. Other recent grantees include Oxfam India, the China Women Development Foundation and the Amity Foundation, which distributed food, water and other supplies to flood victims.

Grants for Women and Girls

Give2Asia supports organizations involved in women’s education, poverty alleviation, reproductive health, safety and advocacy. Funding for women and girls currently prioritizes India, Nepal, Indonesia and Cambodia. In India, the foundation has supported the Industree Crafts Foundation, which helps women set up manufacturing businesses based on traditional skills. A grantee in Indonesia, LBH APIK Bali, combats violence against women and children through workshops, advocacy and policy change. Another grantee, Cambodian Kids Can, used funding to support a college preparatory high school for girls in the poor rural province of Prey Veng.

Grants for Arts and Culture

Give2Asia has organized funding for a range of visual arts, performing arts and media organizations in China, Cambodia, Indonesia and the Philippines. In China, grants have gone to the Muller Chamber Choir, the Cloud Gate Culture and Arts Foundation and the I Share Community Development Association. Other grantees include Ballet Philippines, Cambodia’s Bophana Audiovisual Resource Center, the Lontar Foundation and the Bamboo Organ Foundation.
