Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health 

OVERVIEW: The Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health is the philanthropic entity of the American Group Psychotherapy Association.

The foundation awards grants for research on the efficacy of group psychotherapy, awards for excellence in the field and scholarships for attendance at its yearly conference. PROFILE: The Group Foundation for Advancing Mental Health was established as a philanthropic entity by the American Group Psychotherapy Association in 1963. The foundation is “dedicated to changing lives through therapeutic group work by advancing the most effective and innovative approaches to group therapy education, training research and community outreach. This funder supports mental health and brain research that aims to “demonstrate the effectiveness of group psychotherapy. The foundation also funds scholarships for students and professionals who wish to attend association conferences and yearly awards for excellence in group psychotherapy. 

Grants for Mental Health

The foundation’s research grants support quantitative or qualitative research studies, as well as meta-analyses of psychotherapeutic practice. Areas of specific interest include treatment outcomes, process-outcome relationships, formats and approaches, variables that impact group treatment, cost effectiveness and comparisons of group therapy to other forms of treatment. Research grants generally support individuals or research teams in amounts up to $5,000. Recipients are required to acknowledge funding in resulting publications. 

The foundation also supports mental health via its annual awards programs, which support outstanding work in the field of group psychotherapy:

  • The Alonso Award for Excellence in Psychodynamic Group Therapy is awarded each year to the author or authors of a paper, book, dissertation, video or other project that demonstrates original thinking in the field of group psychotherapy. The award consists of a $500 cash prize and applications are accepted until November 1 of each year. 

  • The Aaron Stein Memorial Fund Award is awarded yearly to one organization that operates in the general locale of the American Group Psychotherapy Associations annual conference and that demonstrates “creative applications of groups therapy and techniques to benefit the community.” This award also consists of a cash prize of $500. Organizations must be recommended to the foundation for this award. 

  • The Social Responsibility Award is given each year to an individual association member or affiliated organization that “has provided an exceptional service that ultimately benefits the public-at-large.” Recognized services include professional training programs, pro bono work or direct services for communities’ psychiatric needs. Applications for this award are accepted up until October 1 of each year. 

  • The Humanitarian Award is given each year to an “esteemed individual whose ability and position, either personal, corporate, foundation and/or politically based, has enabled him/her to do work reaching into and providing vitally needed services to a community.” Nominations for this award are accepted until October 1 of each year. 

The foundation’s scholarships are awarded to students and professionals who wish to attend the organization’s annual AGPA Connect conference and are intended to cover conference expenses including travel costs. Applications for scholarships are due by November 1 of each year. 

Grants for Brain and Cell Research

While most of the Group Foundation’s research grants support psychology research, studies of the impact of group therapy on the brain/ brain injuries are also eligible for funding. Research grants are generally awarded to individuals or research teams in amounts up to $5,000, and recipients are required to acknowledge funding in resulting publications.
