PROFILE: The Atlanta-based Philip and Irene Toll Gage Foundation was established in 1986 by Betty Gage Holland, who was the widow of James M. Cox, Jr., a former chair of Cox Enterprises, Inc. A philanthropist during her lifetime, Betty Gage Holland named the foundation for her parents. The Toll Gage Foundation maintains a low profile, but its tax filings indicate grantmaking for global development, visual arts and music. This funder conducts a significant portion of its grantmaking through the Charities Aid Foundation of America.

Grants for Global Development

The foundation conducts a significant portion of its global funding through the Charities Aid Foundation of America, an organization that “facilitates domestic and cross-border giving by Americans to validated charities around the world.” Toll Gage has supported the Human Needs Project, which aims to bring water, sanitation and energy to underserved communities around the world, and Orphanaid Africa, which provides orphans in Ghana and other African nations with nurturing homes and education.

Grants for Visual Arts

Toll Gage’s visual arts funding mainly supports established and well-known museums in the U.K., where it has given to the Tate Gallery, the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Elsewhere, the foundation has given to the Friends of the Uffizi Gallery and France’s Musées des Arts Decoratifs.

Grants for Music

Music is a smaller area of giving for the Toll Gage Foundation. Funding for music causes appears to be tapering off in recent years. The foundation’s main recipient is London’s Southbank Centre, Europe’s largest performing arts center.
